Advanced Forensic Digital Imaging (ADIGIM)

Purpose of the course:

This course is designed as a continuation of the digital image training received on the Forensic Identification Course and the Basic Digital Imaging Course. Candidates will have hands-on training with digital cameras. Candidates will use advanced methods of fingerprint enhancement using Adobe Photoshop. The course will cover digital theory, legal issues, file management and the use of camera RAW.

Objectives:

  • Legal issues, Image management and Standard Operating Procedures.
  • Image formats; Jpeg, Tiff and Camera RAW.
  • Advanced Image enhancement using Adobe Photoshop with Channel Mixer, Calculations, Hue and Saturation, Emboss and High Pass Filter.
  • Introduction to Fast Fournier Transfer (pattern removal filters)
  • Introduction to Video enhancement using Video De-Lace.
  • Skew to correct images taken on an angle or curved surface.
  • Photographing Panoramas

Participant selection criteria:

  1. Presently employed as full time Scenes of Crime Examiners. (i.e. working in the area of photography, fingerprint identification, scenes of crime examination and evidence collection/presentation).
  2. Successfully completed the Forensic Identification Course or equivalent. (An equivalent course is one that teaches the basic principals of photography, fingerprint identification and scenes of crime examination including the collection, identification, preservation and presentation of various types of physical evidence). Please include documentation of equivalent courses when applying.
  3. Successfully completed the Basic Digital Imaging Course or the Forensic Identification Course (since 2001) or equivalent. (An equivalent course is one that teaches calibration of images 1:1, enhancement of fingerprint images using Adobe Photoshop and creating court chart)
  4. The students must be able to operate a computer in a windows environment to the extent that they can; a) locate files on multiple hard drives, b) create and rename files, c) move, copy, cut and paste files and d) use pop down file menus. Please include documentation of computer courses taken and a cover letter from a direct supervisor stating that the candidate has the necessary computer skills as set out.

Special features:

Absenteeism may result in the student not being permitted to complete the course. Students are therefore requested to clear up as many commitments as possible before proceeding on course, eliminating recall to their duty districts. Where such commitments are unavoidable, a fax from the student's department or a copy of the subpoena is requested.

Participant Assessments:

Students will be examined on course content.
