Description
This course focuses on the effects and nature of explosives, improvised explosive devices and related potential hazards. Students examine theoretical applications, review the effects and nature of explosives and how explosives are used by criminals and terrorists. A significant amount of time is dedicated to specific explosion demonstrations and practical exercises.

Learning outcomes
- Understanding the nature and effects of different types of detonators
- Ability to identify commercial and military explosives and various triggering methods
- Understanding the procedure and process for dealing with a Chemical, Biological, Radiological, Nuclear (CBRN) agent
- Knowledge of the procedures for responding to a bomb threat
- Understanding the process for assisting in a post blast investigation
Eligibility and mandatory requirements
- This course is offered to employees from qualified police and accredited security agencies, as well as Law enforcement, military and government agency personnel where a rudimentary comprehension of explosives is required to effectively fulfill their duties
- Acceptance or refusal in the course is at the discretion of the Canadian Police College
Assessment
- Success in the course is based on participation and completion of all required assignments
- Various evaluation methods are used, including assessment of case study, peer evaluation, final exam, and range exercise
- Re-testing or re-evaluation is conducted at the discretion of the course instructor
